WHEAT ALLERGY & GLUTEN INTOLERANCE

You do not feel well after eating wheat products and are unsure what’s causing it? Don’t worry, figuring it out is our bread and butter!

Wheat allergy or gluten intolerance?

First we have to explain the difference.
  • What is a wheat allergy?

A wheat allergy is a sensitisation of the immune system against the proteins of wheat products. To test this, your blood sample will be checked for raised IgE-levels to different wheat products. You can find the full list of allergy triggers tested here.

  • What is a gluten intolerance?

A gluten intolerance is caused by a sensitivity reaction of the immune system reacting to proteins in wheat, barley and rye. To test this, your blood sample will be checked for raised IgG-levels to gluten. You can find the full liste of intolerance triggers here.

  • What is Coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease that affects about 1% of the Western population.

    • Gluten causes an inflammatory reaction in the digestive tract of the patient

    • This inflammation leads to diarrhoea, weightloss and malnutrition

    • Coeliac disease is NOT a food allergy

    • The symptoms can be extremely discomforting for patients, but they are not life-threatening (Coeliac cannot cause an anaphylactic shock)

    • We cannot detect Coeliac disease with our 7DROPS tests

Expert opinion

"The 7DROPS combination test is the best way to screen for wheat allergy and gluten intolerance, especially if you are not sure what component of a wheat product like bread or pasta you are reacting to. Even though the symptoms of Coeliac disease are also triggered by the ingestion of gluten, it cannot be tested through any 7DROPS test. "
